At the same time, on the day of Snana Purnima, Lord Jagannath appears in Gajanan disguise in front of his devotees and gives darshan. There is a deep religious and mythological reason hidden behind this special disguise, which is considered to be extremely important for the devotees.
What is the legend behind Gajanan disguise?
There is a very interesting and revered story related to Gajanan costume. It is believed that in ancient times, Ganpati Bhatt, an ardent Ganesh devotee of Maharashtra, went on a pilgrimage and reached Puri to see Lord Jagannath. He was desperately wishing for the divine darshan of his adorable Shri Ganesha. But when he toured the entire Puri Dham, he did not see the temple of Lord Ganesha anywhere. Seeing this, they were very disappointed.
Pleased with the intense devotion and true devotion of Ganapati Bhatt, Lord Jagannath created a unique Leela. He decided that he himself would appear to his devotee in the form of Ganesha. On the day of Jyeshtha Purnima, when Ganapati Bhatta was meditating in the temple, Lord Jagannath disguised himself as Gajanan and gave him a vision. Seeing this supernatural form of God, Ganapati Bhatt’s eyes were filled and all his disappointment was erased in a moment.
